Army and police confront gangs in Rio’s Rocinha favela
October 10 - the Brazilian army returned to the favelas of Rocinha, the largest favelas in Brazil. This favela is located in the south of Rio. Almost 70,000 people live in Rocinha, making it the most populated favela in Brazil.
The army assisted the police in a search operation in the bordering area. Searches are in the surrounding forests.
Colonel Roberto Itamar said in an interview that they were looking for “arms, ammunition, explosives, all of these used by criminal factions”
On September 17, fights had been intense and the police needed to step in against heavily armed traffickers. The army had left the favela on September 29 but violence continued to increase. So the police were sent in again. The conflict has been raging for years.

10 octobre 2017- l’armée brésilienne a dû à nouveau intervenir pour appuyer la police dans le quartier de Rocinha, 70.000 habitants, une des plus grandes favelas du pays située au sud de Rio.
Les militaires cherchaient dans les forêts des alentours des armes cachées par les cartels de la drogue.
Le colonel Roberto Itamar a déclaré dans une interview qu’ils recherchaient des « armes, munitions, explosifs, tous autres matériaux utilisés par les factions criminelles ».
L’armée était déjà intervenue le 17 septembre mais s’était retirée le 29 septembre, jugeant la situation « stable », après des combats intenses et violents.
La violence liée aux gangs met la ville de Rio sous pression.
