Presidential candidates avoided abortion issues

On October 3, Jandira dos Santos Cruz, aged 27, and Elisangela Barbosa, aged 32, died after a botched clandestine abortion,. 

These shocking deaths have drawn attention to the huge risks that hundreds of thousands of Brazilian women take to get an abortion.

In Brazil, abortion can only be legally performed if the pregnancy puts the life of the woman in danger, if it's the result of a rape or if the fetus’s brain is not developed.

In response to those deaths, many protests have been staged by women. Placards read: "Somos todas Jandira" or "Somos todas Elisangela" ("We are all Jandira" - "We are all Elisangela"), because every other day, a woman dies in Brazil after a clandestine abortion. 

All three main presidential candidates stayed silent and avoided the issue, when they were asked about it, they all said that they opposed a change in the law.

The tragic story of these women may serve to open a national debate about abortion, but for now, the country's top politicians seem in no hurry to be the ones to start that discussion.

Le 3 octobre 2014, deux femmes sont mortes après un avortement clandestin, Jandira dos Santos Cruz, 27 ans et Elisangela Barbosa, 32 ans. 

Ces morts ont attiré l'attention sur les énormes risques que prennent les femmes pour avorter. En effet, au Brésil, les avortements ne sont autorisés, de manière légale, que s'ils représentent un danger pour la femme enceinte, s'ils sont le résultat d'un viol ou si le cerveau du fœtus n'est pas encore développé.

En réaction à ces tristes nouvelles, des femmes ont manifesté, brandissant des pancartes où on pouvait lire: "Somos todas Jandira" et "Somos todas Elisangela" ("Nous sommes toutes Jandira" - "Nous sommes toutes Elisangela"), car tous les deux jours, une femme meurt au Brésil après un avortement clandestin.

Tous les principaux candidats à la présidentielle sont restés de marbre et ont évité le sujet, et lorsqu'ils ont été interrogé, ils ont tous déclaré qu'ils ne feraient aucun changement dans la loi.

L’histoire tragique de ces femmes pourra peut-être servir à ouvrir un débat national sur l'avortement, mais, apparemment, les politiciens du pays ne semblent pas pressés de commencer cette discussion.
