Last Tuesday, a huge fire broke out in a tower of Sao Paulo, devastating it and killing one person.
Sao Paulo is the biggest town in South America with 11 million inhabitants. It’s, also, the economic capital of Brazil. This city has lots of poverty problems like shanty towns and housing which doesn’t respect safety rules. The fire began very early in the morning, and quickly invaded 26 floors of the building. The incident was caused by a gas explosion. Flames also propagated to two others building in the surroundings.
Firefighters tried to master the situation and evacuate the maximum of people. The building had become a squat mostly made with combustible material, making it very insecure. It was a former federal police building abandoned 10 years ago.
The man, who was killed, was trapped in the upper levels. He died when the building collapsed. Moreover, forty-nine people remain missing. The survivors of the disaster camped near a church and wounded persons were treated by first-aid workers.
An eye -witnesses said “the building came down like a tsunami”. Inhabitants had to be evacuated quickly and left all their personal stuff.
Brazil’s government has to find solutions to avoid this type of incidents and help people to find safe housing.
Un incendie mortel dans une tour de Sao Paulo provoque son effondrement
Mardi dernier, un grand incendie s’est déclaré dans une tour de Sao Paulo, la dévastant et tuant une personne. Sao Paulo est la plus grande ville d’Amérique du Sud avec 11 millions d’habitants et est aussi la capitale économique du Brésil. Elle connait beaucoup de problèmes de pauvreté comme les bidonvilles et les logements qui ne respectent pas les règles de sécurité.
L’incendie, causé par une explosion de gaz, a débuté très tôt dans la matinée, envahissant rapidement les 26 étages du bâtiment. Les flammes se sont propagées à deux autres bâtiments des alentours.
Les pompiers ont tenté de maitriser la situation et d’évacuer un maximum de personnes. L’immeuble était devenu un squat où s’étaient accumulés des matériaux facilement inflammables, le rendant très peu sûr. C’était un ancien bâtiment de la police fédéral abandonné il y a 10 ans.
L’homme, qui a été tué, s’est retrouvé piégé dans les étages supérieurs. Il est mort lors de l’effondrement de la tour. De plus, quarante-neuf personnes restent portées disparues. Les rescapés de la catastrophe ont campé près d'une église et les blessés ont été pris en charge par les secours.
D’après des témoins, « le bâtiment s’est effondré comme avec un tsunami ». Les habitants ont dû évacuer rapidement et laisser toutes leurs affaires personnelles.
Le gouvernement brésilien doit trouver des solutions pour éviter ce type d’incident et aider les habitants à trouver des logements sûrs.
