In 1979, Cesare Battisti was jailed for belonging to a far-left group (the Armed Proletarians for communism or PAC), banned in Italy during the “Lead Years”.
After escaping in 1981, he fled to France in 1990. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1990s in Italy for four homicides and complicity of murders committed in the 1970s, which he has always denied.
On 13 December 2018, a judge of the Supreme Court ordered his arrest "for the purpose of extradition". The Brazilian authorities first lost track of Battisti before finding him in Bolivia. Cesare Battisti, 64 years old, was extradited after being arrested in Santa Cruz de La Sierra on Saturday. The Falcon 900 aircraft landed at Ciampino airport on Monday morning and Battisti was escorted off the plane by a dozen policemen. He will be taken to Rebibbia Prison, where he will serve his sentence for life.
Giuseppe Conte thanked the Bolivian authorities and singled out Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his "effective cooperation" leading to the capture of Battisti. In office since January 1, Bolsonaro, had pledged to extradite Battisti.

Après s'être échappé en 1981, il est arrivé en France en 1990. Il a été condamné en Italie à la prison à perpétuité dans les années 90 pour quatre homicides et complicité de meurtres commis dans les années 1970, ce qu’il a toujours nié.
Le 13 décembre 2018, un juge de la cour suprême a ordonné son arrestation « en vue d’une extradition. » Les autorités brésiliennes avaient perdu sa trace avant de la retrouver en Bolivie.
Cesare Battisti, 64 ans, a été extradé après avoir été retrouvé à Santa Cruz de La Sierra samedi. L'avion Falcon 900 a atterri à l'aéroport de Ciampino lundi matin et Battisti a été escorté hors de l'avion par une douzaine de policiers. Il sera emmené à la prison de Rebibbia, où il purgera sa peine à perpétuité.
Giuseppe Conté a remercié les autorités boliviennes et a félicité le président brésilien Jair Bolsonaro pour sa "coopération efficace" ayant conduit à la capture de Battisti. Bolsonaro, en fonction depuis 1er janvier, s'était engagé à extrader Battisti.
