Indigenous boy murdered in Maranhão
A 15-year-old indigenous boy has been killed on the borders of a heavily deforested indigenous reserve in Brazil. The incident took place in the state of Maranhão, on the fringes of the Amazon.
It’s the fourth murder in the Guajajara tribe in recent weeks, it came along with a wave of racist abuse against indigenous people swept by social media in the state.
The non-profit groupe CIMI (Indigenous Missionary Council) reported that Erisvan Soares’s body of the Guajajara tribe was found with knife wounds on Friday in Amarante do Maranhão.
The group said he had travelled to the town, on the edge of the Araribóia indigenous reserve, with his father. The G1 news site reported that a non-indigenous man by the name of Roberto Silva, 31, had also been killed with Erisvan and that both had died in the early hours of Friday during a party in an area called Vila Industrial.
Indigenous killings climbed 23% in 2018, according to CIMI figures, and land invasions have increased since far-right president Jair Bolsonaro took office in January. He compared the indigenous peoples living on reserves to "prehistoric men" and said that their lands should be developed.

C’est le quatrième meurtre d’un membre de la tribu Guajajara au cours de ces dernières semaines. Il est survenu en même temps qu’une vague de discours racistes contre les peuples autochtones qui ont balayé les médias.
Le groupe à but non lucratif CIMI (Conseil missionnaire indigène) a rapporté que le corps d'Erisvan Soares de la tribu des Guajajara avait été retrouvé vendredi avec sur lui des traces de blessures au couteau à Amarante do Maranhão. Le groupe a déclaré qu'il s'était rendu dans la ville, au bord de la réserve indigène d'Araribóia, avec son père. Le site d'information G1 a rapporté qu'un homme non-indigène du nom de Roberto Silva de 31 ans, avait également été tué avec Erisvan. Les deux sont morts dans les premières heures de vendredi lors d'une fête dans une zone appelée Vila Industrial.
Les assassinats indigènes ont augmenté de 23% en 2018, selon les chiffres du CIMI, et les invasions de terres ont augmenté depuis que le président d'extrême droite Jair Bolsonaro a pris ses fonctions en janvier. Il a comparé les peuples autochtones vivant dans les réserves aux "hommes préhistoriques" et a déclaré que leurs terres devraient être développées.
