Bolsonaro blames DiCaprio

Brazil’s president has incorrectly suspected the actor and conservationist Leonardo DiCaprio of bankrolling the deliberate burning of the Amazon timberland.

Jair Bolsonaro , a democrat nationalist who has vowed to kick environmental NGOs out of Brazil, made the claim on Friday, reportedly telling supporters: “This Leonardo DiCaprio’s a cool guy, isn’t he? Giving money for the Amazon to be torched.”

The spurious accusation, for which Brazil’s president offered no proof, came twenty-four hours after Bolsonaro made an equally unsupported claim in a Facebook live broadcast.

“Leonardo DiCaprio, dammit, you’re collaborating with the burning of the Amazon,” Bolsonaro declared, accusing the actor of being part of an international “campaign against Brazil”.

On Thursday Bolsonaro’s politician son Eduardo claimed on Twitter that DiCaprio had given $300,000 to “the NGO that set fire to the Amazon” and suspected the conservation group WWF of paying the NGO £13,000 for pictures of the burning forest.

In a statement WWF’s Brazil office rejected those claims. “WWF Brazil rejects the attacks on its partners and the lies involving its name, including a series of lie-based social media attacks such as the purchase of photographs linked to a donation from the actor Leonardo DiCaprio.”

Bolsonaro s’en prend à DiCaprio

Le vendredi 29 novembre le président brésilien Jair Bolsonaro a accusé à tort l’acteur américain Leonardo DiCaprio, défenseur de l’environnement, de financer les incendies qui ravagent la forêt amazonienne.

Jair Bolsonaro, qui tente de chasser toutes les ONG du Brésil, a déclaré ce vendredi : « Ce Leonardo Dicaprio est un type cool, il donne de l’argent pour que la forêt amazonienne brûle ».

Le jeudi précédent, le fils de Bolsonaro avait affirmé que DiCaprio avait donné 300.000 $ à « l’ONG qui a mis le feu à l’Amazonie » et que le WWF aurait versé 13 000$ pour prendre des photos de l’Amazonie en feu.

Dans un communiqué, la WWF Brésil a rejeté ces accusations ; « Le WWF Brésil rejette les attaques contre ses partenaires et les mensonges impliquant son nom, y compris une série d’attaques basées sur le mensonge dans les réseaux sociaux comme l’achat de photos liées à un don de l’acteur Leonardo DiCaprio »
