Military police fight for their rights
Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has sent military and national guard troops to the north-eastern state of Ceará in an attempt to quell a brewing security crisis triggered by police officers’ strike.
The decision was taken on Thursday after chaotic scenes during which a local senator was shot and wounded after he drove a digger at a picketing line held by masked cops.
An editorial in the Folha de Sao Paulo called the Ceará strike “armed blackmail” that requires to be “contained” before it spills over to other states.
Military police strikes are illegal in Brazil, and sometimes terribly bloody. A 2017 strike in the state of Espírito Santo sawmore than 200 murders in three weeks. According to the G1 news website, Ceará, a costal state of just about nine million people, recorded fifty-one homicides in 48 hours of strike while nine of the state’s forty-three force barracks were occupied by masked men.
But with growing political strength and a sympathetic president, analysts see extra potentialities of amnesties for the illegal strikes and much less probability of sanction.
