Manchete magazine former headquarters have been destroyed.
RIO- It is 5 am in the morning and a demolition project has just started in Estacio, a place that was notorious for its run down and dilapilated buildings. The building being demolished is the headquarters of a weekly magazine that was published between 1952 and 2000. Inhabitants living within 150m from the building were evacuated one hour before, no vehicles were allowed to park and a brief statement was released describing the measures that were taken. At 7am and in only 11 seconds the building was brought down.
The 132 families that were occupying the building under low sanitary conditions were provided with temporary housing by the municipality until the construction of new housing is done. Two new 7 storey blocks will be built with a total of 91apartments consisting of 3 to 4 bedrooms each. According to the housing secretary of the municipality, the new buildings will be occupied by the working class of the neighborhood. "Vila Operaria " situated in Estacio.,
Vila Operaria in Estacio, built in the early 20 th century was taken over by the Municipality in 1895 and will now be reorganized by the governement.
The construction period will last about 90 days and cost $714 810 275.
So far, the future – either commercial or residential - of Vila Operaria isn’t certain.

L’immeuble visé est le siège d’une célèbre revue hebdomadaire publiée entre 1952 et 2000.
Les résidents, dans un rayon de 150m mètres autour de l’immeuble ont été évacués une heure avant l’explosion. Aucun véhicule n’est autorisé à stationner autour, un communiqué a été distribué auparavant, pour expliquer les mesures à prendre.
Deux heures plus tard, et en seulement 11 secondes, la construction s’est effondrée.
Les 132 familles qui y habitaient, dans des conditions insalubres, ont été relogés provisoirement par la municipalité jusqu’à l’achèvement des travaux.
Deux nouvelles habitations vont être réalisées avec un total de 91 appartements de 3 à 4 pièces chacun.
Selon le service municipal du logement, les nouveaux immeubles seront occupés par la classe ouvrière de Villa Opéraria située à Estacio.
Villa Opéraria construite au début du 20 ème siècle a été gérée par la municipalité jusqu’en 1895 et est aujourd’hui régie par l’Etat.
