 A winning game for Brazil’s economy

 In 2007 Brazil was chosen this year to host the 2013 world Cup and is now preparing for the event. However, the World Cup FIFA International Committee is urging the Brazilian authorities to step up preparations if they want to be ready in time as the different constructions, especially the stadiums, still require huge building works. 

 The most important erections are set in Northern Brazil, where the biggest stadiums, shops and restaurants represent big investments in terms of time and money. Even if it is a big challenge to stage the event, it gives Brazilian people more opportunities to get a job and thereby to reduce unemployment in the country. However some expenses are not approved unanimously. Indeed the accommodation of the different luxury suites for the football players is arousing indignation among the population, considering the amount of people living under the poverty line in Brazil. A civil lawyer Bruno Vasconcellos claimed: “Money’s being thrown away on something completely unnecessary whereas the country needs more investment in education and health.”

 Even if the government has been criticized, a lot of football lovers are looking forward to seeing the matches and meanwhile, Brazilian traders take this opportunity to already benefit from the event. Last week, tickets went on sale to the general public with almost 190,000 requested in the first 24 hours, a new record in the history of the competition. Thus, the event promises to boost the Brazilian economy.

 l’économie brésilienne a déjà gagné la coupe du monde de football

 En 2007, le Brésil a été choisi pour accueillir la coupe du monde de football qui aura lieu en 2013 et se prépare à l’événement. Cependant, le comité international de la coupe du monde FIFA fait actuellement pression sur les autorités brésiliennes pour accélérer la construction des infrastructures, notamment celles des stades, qui nécessite encore d’énormes travaux.

Les plus grandes installations se trouvent au Nord du Brésil où se concentrent les plus grands stades, magasins et restaurants qui représentent de lourds investissements en termes de temps et d’argent. Même si la mise en place de cette Coupe représente un réel défi pour le pays, elle offre aux Brésiliens de nouvelles opportunités d’emploi et participe activement à la réduction du chômage.

Certaines dépenses cependant ne font pas l’unanimité. L’aménagement de suites de luxe pour les footballers venants du monde entier suscite l’indignation parmi la population, compte tenu du nombre de personnes vivant en dessous du seuil de pauvreté. Bruno Vasconcellos, un avocat brésilien a par exemple déclaré: « cet argent est gaspillé inutilement, alors que le pays aurait plutôt besoin d’investissements dans l’éducation et la santé.”

Même si le gouvernement a été beaucoup critiqué à propos de la coupe du Monde, les amoureux du football ont hâte d’assister aux différents matchs qui démarreront bientôt et pendant ce temps, les hommes d’affaires brésiliens tirent déjà profit de l’événement. La semaine dernière, la mise en vente de tickets pour les matchs a généré 190.000 demandes dans les premières 24 heures, un nouveau record dans l’histoire de la compétition. L’événement promet ainsi de relancer l’économie brésilienne.

Architectural genius Oscar Niemeyer dies

  

          

     Oscar Niemeyer died on November 5 at the Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. He was hospitalized because of a respiratory infection since November. The funeral ceremony took place December 10 in Botafogo, the city where Oscar Niemeyer was born 104 years ago on December 15.

    He leaves behind him a wonderful architectural heritage; he is the instigator of the curve architecture. He said he found inspiration in Brazilian women’s curves.

    He studied at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro but he found the teaching too ordinary and classic. He left Brazil during the dictatorship (1964-1985) and went to France where he built a part of his impressive carrier. When he came back to Brazil, his fame had doubled, he was known and recognized.  

    He built the main government buildings in Brasilia, the UN headquarters in New York with Le Corbusier and a few buildings in France like the Communist Party headquarters in Paris.  

    Thanks to him, the architecture changed, the use of geometric figures and curves became widespread in Brazil and all over the world.

    He was criticized and also admired because of his rejection of conventional designs. Despite these criticisms, he received the Pritzker (Architecture Nobel Prize) in 1988.

    Lots of Brazilians paid homage to this towering national figure sharing Dilma Rousseff ‘s belief that “Brazil today lost one of its geniuses”.

               Mort d’un génie

     Le 5 novembre, Oscar Niemeyer est mort à l’hôpital Samaritano de Rio de Janeiro. Il était hospitalisé depuis novembre à la suite d’une infection respiratoire. Il a été enterré le 10 décembre à Botafogo, la ville où il avait vu le jour 104 ans auparavant.

    Il laisse derrière lui un incroyable héritage architectural, lui, l’instigateur de l’architecture de courbes. Son inspiration lui venait disait-il, des courbes des femmes brésiliennes.

   Il avait étudié à l’école des Beaux-arts de Rio de Janeiro cependant l’enseignement donné était trop ordinaire et trop classique à son goût. Il quitte le Brésil pendant la dictature (1964-1985) et s’installe en France où il va  façonner une partie de son impressionnante carrière. A son retour de France en 1985, sa notoriété est désormais établie.

    Il construit la plupart des bâtiments politiques de Brasilia, le siège de l’ONU à New York en collaboration avec Le Corbusier et aussi quelques bâtiments en France comme le siège du parti communiste français. 

    Grâce à lui, l’architecture a changé, les figures géométriques et les courbes sont se répandues au Brésil mais aussi dans le monde entier.

   Il était à la fois critiqué et admiré pour son rejet de l’architecture conventionnel. Malgré ces critiques et grâce à sa renommée et à son talent, il reçoit le Pritzker (Prix Nobel d’architecture) en 1988.

   Le monde entier lui rend hommage et de nombreux Brésiliens partagent le sentiment exprimé par Dilma Rousseff, la présidente brésilienne, « le Brésil a perdu l’un de ses génies ».

Christmas Spirit

RIO DE JANEIRO - Yippee , it is the beginning of Christmas celebrations.

The illumination of a 28 storey-high Christmas tree has been celebrated with fireworks, Christmas carols and free shows around the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.

To make everyone happy during this period, the British and Commonwealth Society (BCS) and the International Club of Rio (InC) have set up a plethora of activities.

People will meet at the Christmas party and also share gourmet food and wine .

These events are held early in the month as many group members tend to travel home as the holidays get closer.

Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get in to the spirit of Christmas is to decorate one’s home with festive objects and many shops in Rio carry a wide variety of ornaments.

What is Christmas without a Christmas tree? Whether artificial or real, everyone will findsomething resembling a traditional pine tree in plant stores and in famous shops like "Lojas Americanas".

On December 16, Christ Church in Botafogo will welcome anyone who wish to celebrate the more traditional and religious aspects of the holiday. As is customary, Christ Church will also be holding their annual family Christmas service on December 25th at 10:30AM.

And as Christmas is based on generosity above all, even cafes like the Gringo Café in Ipanema will offer a present: one Christmas dinner from 8:30 AM to 5PM on December 24thand 8:30 AM to Midnight on December 25th.

   

L’esprit de Noel s’installe

RIO DE JANEIRO – Youpi ! L’illumination du sapin de Noël, haut de 28 étages à été inauguré lors d’une cérémonie accompagnée d'un feu d’artifice, de chants de Noël ainsi que de spectacles autour du lagon Rodrigo De Freitas.

Pour que tout le monde soit heureux, la British and Commonwealth Society (BCS) et le club international de Rio (InC) ont mis en place bon nombre d’activités pour les expatriés.

Ils auront l’occasion de se rencontrer au cours de la fête de Noël et de partager bons vins et petits plats.

Ces événements sont prévus en début de mois, en raison du retour au pays de nombreux résidents étrangers.

.  

Même s’ils ne peuvent rivaliser avec ceux de l’hémisphère nord, de nombreux magasinsproposent une large variété de décorations.

Que serait  Noël sans sapin? Vrai ou faux, peu importe.

Tout le monde trouvera  son bonheur, dans les fameux magasins " Lojas Americanas" et bien sûr dans les jardineries.

L’Eglise du Christ située à Botafogo accueillera le 16 décembre toute personne voulant célébrer Noël selon la tradition religieuse. La messe du 25 décembre aura lieu à 10 du matin.  

L'esprit de Noël repose sur la générosité avant tout.

Même les cafés jouent le jeu tel le Gringo Café situé à Ipanema qui offrira  cette année en 

cadeau le repas de Noël du 24 au 25 décembre.
