Major riot in Goiás Prison causes 9 deaths and 14 wounded

On January1, a major riot was provoked in the Goiás Prison by many groups of prisoners. This incident left 9 deaths and 14 wounded. Goiás is a state, situated in the center of Brazil, whose main city is Brasilia. 

The incident started when a gang invaded a wing of the prison where a rival gang were held. 

According to the Brazilian prison authorities, these confrontations caused a fire which was quickly mastered by the “Copro de Bombeiros”. 

Prison authorities reported that 106 detainees fled during the riot. The police confirmed that the situation is stabilized and researches continue for the remaining fugitives. 

Brazil is host to the world’s third biggest prison population with 726,712 prisoners (in June 2016), while the capacity of prisons is lower than 370,000. Prisons are overcrowded and it is a major issue for the country.

Ce 1er janvier, une émeute de grande ampleur dans la prison de Goiás a été provoquée par plusieurs groupes de prisonniers. Cet incident laisse 9 morts et 14 blessés. Goiás est un état, situé au centre du Brésil, avec pour ville principale Brasilia. 

L’incident a débuté lorsque qu’un gang a envahi une aile de la prison fief d’un gang rival. Selon l'administration pénitentiaire brésilienne, ces confrontations ont provoqué un incendie qui a rapidement été maitrisé par les “Copro de Bombeiros”. 

L’administration pénitentiaire a annoncé que 106 détenus s’étaient échappés pendant l'émeute. La police a confirmé que la situation était stabilisée et les recherches continuent pour les fugitifs restants. 

Le Brésil abrite la troisième plus importante population carcérale au monde avec 726.712 prisonniers (en juin 2016), alors que la capacité des prisons est inférieure à 370.000 places. Les prisons sont surchargées et c'est un réel problème pour le pays.
