Jair Bolsonaro is Brazil’s new president

Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro was elected October 28 at the second round with 55.1% of the votes against Fernando Haddad with 44.9%. 

He appealed to voters mainly for his commitment to fight crimes and corruption, after many scandals.

His opponents blame him for being homophobic, racist and sexist. In 2015, he even claimed a fellow legislator that she was too ugly to be raped. 

Among the main reactions, US President Donald Trump said on Twitter he “had a very good conversation with the newly elected president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who won his race by a substantial margin. We agreed that Brazil and the United States will work closely together on Trade, Military and everything else! Excellent call, wished him congrats!”.

As for the French President Emmanuel Macron, he congratulated the new Brazilian leader and affirmed his willingness to continue the cooperation with this country, in accordance with democratic principles.

L’actualité est marquée par l’élection du nouveau président d’extrême droite Jair Bolsonaro. Il a été élu le 28 octobre au deuxième tour avec 55,1 % des votes face à Fernando Haddad qui en comptait 44,9 %. 

Il a mené sa campagne en mettant en avant son engagement pour la lutte contre le crime et la corruption, suite à une série de scandales.

Ses opposants lui reprochent d’être homophobe, raciste et sexiste. En 2015, il a même déclaré à une collègue qu’elle était trop laide pour être violée!

L’une des principales réactions a été celle du président américain Donald Trump qui a déclaré sur Twitter: “Nous avons eu une très bonne conversation avec le président brésilien nouvellement élu, Jair Bolsonaro, qui a remporté sa course avec une marge substantielle. Nous avons convenu que le Brésil et les États-Unis travailleraient en étroite collaboration dans les domaines du commerciaux, militaires et tout le reste ! Excellente conversation, félicitations !”

Quant au président de la République française Emmanuel Macron, il a félicité le nouveau dirigeant brésilien tout en affirmant sa volonté de poursuivre la coopération avec ce pays dans le respect des principes démocratiques.
