Can Marina Silva deliver sustainable politics?
BRAZIL, BRASILIA- Last Saturday, a new political party: «Sustainable Network" was created by a previous minister of the environment.
The career of Marina Silva took off while she was a member of former president Lula’s Worker's Party.
She decided to resign as a minister in 2008. She was replaced by the pragmatic environmentalist Carlos Minc.
Being a tough advocate and a candidate in the green party helped boost her reputation. Despite her growing political popularity, Marina Silva decided to leave the green party a year later.
Ms Silva who came third with nearly 20m votes in her 2010 presidential bid spoke to hundreds of supporters as she announced the creation of a new political party thanks to the collection of 500,000 signatures.
Launching the new party, Marina Silva ruled out taking either a pro or anti-government stance. During, her speech, Marina said “it is not a party created just for the elections; it's a new vision of the world, in which we will be participants and not just spectators.” She also stressed the party's green credentials.

Marina Silva also wants to break the "herd mentality" of most parties, she claims.
The fact, that the former Amazon activist will run in the next elections has not beenconfirmed, however, although it seems very likely.
Will this new party make a change? It is hoped so as in the field of sustainability, Brazil isn't in an excellent position.

Marina Silva has a complex personality. This conservative and progressive woman is one of the rare Afro-Brazilian female politicians and above all, she is a tireless campaigner for environmental issues. The creation of this new political party can only be of benefit to a country such as Brazil. As an activist for the protection of the Amazon rain forest, “the lungs of the Planet ", Maria Silva will have the opportunity to be heard across party lines.
With its natural wealth and its immense area, the Amazon rain forest is going through a process of occupation which is leading to the total destruction of rich biological and economic ecosystems performing globally and regionally fundamental economic roles especially in the atmospheric and hydrological domains.
It was time to take care of the country's ecology and also of the Amazon rain forest, one of the planet's main pillars.
Un nouveau souffle
BRASILIA- Ancienne ministre de l'environnement du président Lula, Marina Silva a lancé àBrasilia, samedi 16 février, un nouveau parti politique appelé "Réseau durable".
L’ex-militante pour la protection de la forêt amazonienne avait claqué la porte du gouvernement le 13 mai 2008 pour être remplacée le lendemain par le géographe et environnementaliste Carlos Minc. Elle avait également quitté le Parti des Travailleurs (PT), la formation du président.
Devant plusieurs centaines de militants, celle qui avait obtenu, contre toute attente, 20 millions de voix au premier tour de la présidentielle de 2010 à affirmé lors de son discoursvouloir faire de la politique autrement sans soutenir, ni s’opposer au gouvernement.
" Il ne s'agit pas seulement d’un parti créé pour les élections ", " c’est une nouvelle vision d'un monde dans lequel, nous ne seront plus spectateurs mais acteurs," a-t-elle déclaré.
Mme Silva dit vouloir suivre le modèle du président américain Barack Obama et briser le moule du conformisme politique.
L'ancienne sénatrice n'a toutefois pas annoncé si elle allait être à nouveau candidate auxélections présidentielles de 2014.
Il se trouve que sur le plan du développement durable, le Brésil n'est pas une référence.
Opinion:
Personnalité autant complexe qu'attachante, elle est une des rares personnages
afro-brésiliens de la scène politique. Socialement conservatrice et politiquement progressiste, elle renvoie l'image d'une militante infatigable de la cause écologique, guidée par une grande rectitude morale. La création de ce nouveau parti ne peut être que bénéfique pour le Brésil.
Fervente militante de la protection de l’Amazonie, " les poumons de la terre», Maria Silva pourra se faire plus facilement entendre par les autres partis. Son combat pour l'écologie de ce pays, n'est pas terminé.
Du fait de ses richesses naturelles et de l’immense espace qu’elle constitue, l’Amazonie est en voie de peuplement rapide, apparemment inéluctable. Elle conduit à la destruction totale d’écosystèmes, qui sont biologiquement et économiquement très riches et qui jouent, régionalement et mondialement, des rôles écologiques fondamentaux, en particulier dans les domaines hydrologiques et atmosphériques.
Il était temps qu’un nouveau parti prenne en charge l'écologie d un pays mais surtout la protection de l’Amazonie, un des piliers de la Terre.
